چکیده

There were two main objectives of the current research. The first objective was to complete a final numerical implementation of a statistical inference approach based on a maximum entropy formalism. The second objective was to combine the waveguide parameter statistical inferences with geophysical data from the Shallow Water 2006 (SW06) experiment on the New Jersey continental shelf to model range-dependent acoustic data for the purpose of determining the bandwidth and range over which the effects of range-dependent inhomogenities in the sub bottom layering can be discerned.

On the decay of a baroclinic jet flowing along a continental slope

A jet flowing in the Kelvin wave propagation direction along the seaward side of a continental slope is found to decrease in strength as it leaks mass onto the continental shelf. As a result, a shelf break jet flowing in the opposite direction is induced on the shelf. The combination of these two flows creates a decaying, high-pressure tongue centered about the shelf break. An idealized, reduce...

Internal tides and baroclinicity in the Southern Weddell Sea 2. Effects of the critical latitude and stratification

Tidal dynamics affect Antarctic Bottom Water and Ice Shelf Water production in the southern Weddell Sea and the general circulation and mixing. In this region, tidal dynamics were found to be extremely sensitive both to the proximity of the continental shelf-slope break to the critical latitude ? crit and to the existence of a shelf break front. If the continental slope was not in the vicinity ...

Toward Realistic Modeling of a Shelfbreak Front: Lagrangian Metrics and Process Studies for the Middle Atlantic Bight

A region where predictive capability is sought for tactical concerns is the flow field in the vicinity of the continental shelfbreak. Sound propagation from the continental slope to the continental shelf is a complex process that is highly dependent upon the oceanographic environment. A strong thermal shelfbreak front, and its associated current, are the key features that influence acoustic pro...

3D Propagation and Geoacoustic Inversion Studies in the Mid-Atlantic Bight

Under the Shelf-Break Primer initiative, the Office of Naval Research sponsored a multi-year study of acoustic propagation in the region of the North Atlantic Bight off the coast of New Jersey. This region is of interest due to the combination of sloping bathymetry near the continental shelf and the strong oceanographic frontal features associated with the Gulf Stream. The general purpose of th...

Internal Tides and Baroclinicity in the Southern Weddell Sea. Part I: Model Description and Comparison of Model Results to Observations

In the southern Weddell Sea, several water masses with the capability to form Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW) meet near the continental shelf break. The internal tidal field over the continental shelf break here is of interest due to its potential to mix these waters and form AABW. A modified version of the Princeton Ocean Model (POM) was utilized to investigate the internal tidal fields generate...
